Smoke does not settle like dust - it deposits an oily film that binds to paint and soaks into card. That difference is why a collection in a smoking household looks fine for a year and then cannot be brought back with a cloth: dust sits on a surface, smoke residue bonds to it.
It is also the one contaminant where a sealed enclosure is genuinely the whole answer rather than a nice-to-have.
What smoke actually does to a 1:64 car

The pattern is the same as with every other damage mechanism we cover: the packaging and the printing fail first, and the diecast body is the least affected part.
The single most effective measure
A sealed enclosure. Smoke is airborne, so anything that keeps room air off the car keeps the residue off it too - and unlike UV, where glass is no protection at all, a physical seal is completely effective against an airborne contaminant.
This is the one problem where an enclosed case beats every other measure by a wide margin. An air purifier reduces what is in the room; a seal removes the car from the room entirely.
Practical points:
- A closed front matters more than the material. Acrylic and glass both work; a gap does not.
- Open shelving and pegboards give no protection whatsoever.
- Cabinets with door gaps are partial - better than open, far worse than sealed.
- Cards and boxes should be enclosed too, since they absorb rather than just collect.
The rest of the measures, in order
- Do not smoke in the room the collection is in. Obvious, and it is still the second biggest lever after enclosure.
- Ventilate. Residue concentration falls with air changes; a stagnant room concentrates it.
- An air purifier with activated carbon. Particulate filters catch smoke particles; the carbon stage is what addresses the gaseous and odour component. Neither replaces a seal.
- Move the collection away from the source - a different room is worth more than any device in the same room.
- Do not use the display room as a kitchen adjunct. Cooking oil aerosol behaves the same way as smoke and is the version of this problem that non-smokers get.
If it has already happened
Be realistic: smoke film on a painted, printed 1:64 car is difficult to remove without removing print with it. Tampos sit on the surface, and the solvents that shift an oily film are exactly the ones that lift printing.
- Start with the mildest thing that works: lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, on a soft cloth, and wet before wiping so nothing is dragged across the paint.
- Test somewhere hidden - the base, the underside - before touching a printed panel.
- Do not use solvents on a car with tampos. Isopropyl alcohol will lift printing.
- Accept that packaging is usually unrecoverable. Card absorbs residue and holds odour; cleaning it is not realistic.
- Air the pieces out in a well-ventilated room before enclosing them, or you seal the smell in with them.

Buying a collection from a smoking household
Worth knowing if you buy secondhand:
- Ask before you buy. Most sellers will answer honestly, and it is a fair question.
- Odour on packaging is effectively permanent. Price accordingly, or buy loose cars only.
- Do not put affected pieces straight into a sealed case with clean ones - the residue and odour transfer.
- Check the panel lines, not the flat panels. A grey deposit in the recesses is the tell.
