Avoid swings rather than chasing a number, and never seal a collection airtight unless you are also controlling what is sealed in with it. Those two rules cover most of what goes wrong, and the second one is the mistake people make while actively trying to help.
Humidity is the slowest of the display problems and the least visible. Dust you can see, fading you eventually notice, but moisture damage announces itself only once it is done.
Why stability beats a target
Preservation guidance generally lands on a moderate band rather than a precise figure, and the reason is that repeated cycling does more damage than a steady level slightly outside the ideal. Materials absorb moisture and give it back up as conditions change, and it is that movement - expansion, contraction, paper and card taking up water and releasing it - that loosens joints, warps packaging and lifts print.
The practical version: a cupboard in a heated room that stays roughly the same all year is better than a technically drier space that swings hard between seasons. This is exactly why lofts, garages and basements are the wrong places, covered in what to do with collectibles you do not display.
What damp actually does

The pattern worth noticing: the packaging fails before the object does. For anything where the box carries part of the value, humidity is the mechanism that destroys that value first.
The airtight mistake
The instinct is to seal a collection into a sealed tub to keep damp out. What that actually does is capture whatever humidity was in the room at the moment you closed the lid, and hold it against the contents indefinitely - with no airflow to carry it away.
If it is sealed and the room is warm and damp when you pack it, you have built a small humid chamber. Add a temperature change and the moisture condenses inside.
Two workable options:
- Not sealed. A closed but breathable box in a room you heat. Simple, and adequate for the great majority of collections.
- Sealed with a desiccant that you actually maintain. Which brings us to the part everyone skips.
Silica gel only works if you recharge it
Silica gel packets are not a permanent fix. They absorb until saturated and then do nothing - and a saturated packet sitting in a sealed box is now a small damp object in with your collection.
- Use indicating gel that changes colour when spent, so the state is visible rather than assumed.
- Recharge or replace it on a schedule. Most types can be dried out and reused; the packet that came in a shoebox three years ago is doing nothing.
- Size it to the volume. One sachet in a large tub is decoration.
- Keep it out of contact with painted or printed surfaces.
If you are not going to maintain it, do not seal the container - the unsealed version is genuinely better than a sealed one with a dead desiccant in it.
Where damage starts in a room
- Against outside walls. Coldest surface in the room, so condensation forms there first. Leave an air gap behind anything stored against one.
- On the floor. Cold, and the first place any leak reaches. Get boxes onto a shelf or a batten.
- In unheated rooms that connect to heated ones - the air is warm and moist when the door opens and cold afterwards.
- Near kitchens and bathrooms, the two rooms that generate moisture.
- Inside a closed display case in a cold room. Same mechanism as a sealed tub, on display.
On display, rather than in storage
Displayed pieces are usually fine, because they are normally in heated living space - which is the single biggest factor. Three things still apply:
- Do not display against an outside wall in a cold, poorly insulated room.
- Keep the case out of the kitchen and bathroom.
- Let anything newly built, painted or glued cure in open air before enclosing it - trapping solvent vapour has the same character as trapping moisture, and it hazes the inside of the glazing. That one is in how to display model kits you have built.
A sealed case in a normal heated room is not a humidity risk. A sealed case in an unheated garage is - which is a large part of why we argue against the garage in displaying diecast in a garage.
If you live somewhere genuinely humid
- A dehumidifier in the room beats any container-level measure, because it treats the air the whole collection lives in.
- Air circulation matters. Stagnant air in a closed cupboard is worse than the same humidity in a room with movement.
- Check on it. A cheap hygrometer tells you whether you have a problem before the collection does.
- Separate the packaging. If boxes are the vulnerable part, storing them apart from the objects lets you protect the fragile half properly.
