A built kit is more fragile than anything you buy finished, and it is fragile in ways that are invisible. The paint is still hardening, the decals are bonded by a thin film, the photo-etch is held on by a dot of adhesive, and none of that is obvious from looking at it. Display advice written for bought collectibles misses all of it.
So this is about displaying something you made: what it needs that a factory-finished model does not, and where to put it once it does.
Let it cure before you shut it away
The most common way a finished build is damaged is being sealed into a case too early.
- Paint and clear coats keep off-gassing after they feel dry to the touch. Touch-dry is not cured. Sealed into an enclosed case, those solvents have nowhere to go and can haze the inside of the glazing or leave a film on the model.
- Give it open air first. Somewhere dust-free and out of the way for a while before it goes behind a front panel - longer for enamels and thick clear coats than for acrylics.
- Adhesives too. Cyanoacrylate in particular can leave a white bloom on nearby clear parts as it finishes curing, which is exactly what you do not want happening inside a sealed box.

Dust is worse on a built kit than on anything else
A model kit is a dust trap by design. Panel lines, engine bays, cockpits, rigging, radar arrays, tank tracks - every detail that took hours is a place a cloth cannot reach.
Worse, weathered and matt-finished surfaces hold dust far more readily than gloss, and cleaning them risks lifting the weathering you applied on purpose. Dust removal on a matt weathered finish is genuinely risky, which makes prevention the only real answer.
- Enclose the ones that took the longest. This is the whole argument for a case: not protection from disaster, but from the slow accumulation you cannot clean off.
- Air blower, not cloth, not brush for anything with fine parts. A soft brush catches photo-etch and aerials.
- Placement halves the problem - away from vents, doorways and textiles, as in how to protect a collection from dust.
UV is the one that ruins the work quietly
Modelling paints and decals are not formulated for decades of light exposure. Reds and yellows shift first, decal film yellows, and white plastic under thin paint discolours from underneath.
The rules are the same as for any collectible but the stakes are higher, because a repaint is not a replacement - the build is not reproducible. Keep finished kits out of any direct sun path, use UV-free lighting, and treat a sunny windowsill as off-limits regardless of how good the model looks there. The pattern: the more hours it took, the more it should be enclosed. Time invested is a better guide than the value of the kit.
Handle it once
Decide where a finished model lives and then stop moving it. Most breakage happens in transit between shelves, not on the shelf.
- Pick it up by the base or the thickest structural part, never by a wing, barrel, aerial or mirror.
- Fix it to a base if it has fragile landing gear or a narrow footprint.
- Sort the display before the model goes in it, not after - adjusting a shelf with the model on it is how models get knocked.
Show the work
One thing built kits deserve that bought models do not: context. You made it, and the display can say so.
- A small nameplate with subject, scale and build year. Also genuinely useful five years later when you cannot remember which variant you built.
- A backdrop that matches the subject rather than a generic one.
- Light it properly. Neutral 4000 K at high colour rendering shows the paintwork and weathering as mixed, where warm room light flattens the whole thing into amber - which after all those hours on colour modulation is a waste. Detail in the three numbers that matter.
