The only reliable way to protect diecast cars from dust is to enclose them. Everything else - covers, cloths, air purifiers, careful room choice - slows the rate at which dust arrives, but an open shelf will always end up dusty. That sounds obvious until you look at how most collections are actually stored, which is on open shelving with a plan to clean them later.
This guide is about the prevention half of the problem. If a car is already dusty, start with cleaning dust off model cars without damaging them - the removal method matters, because the wrong cloth does more damage than the dust did.
Why dust is worse on 1:64 than on bigger scales
A 1:64 car is roughly the real car's length divided by 64, so a typical casting is somewhere around 70 mm long. At that size, the panel gaps, the grille, the gap between the wheel and the arch and the recess around the windscreen are all narrower than the tip of any cloth or brush you own.
Dust settles into those recesses first and comes out of them last. On a 1:18 model you can wipe a bonnet and be done; on a 1:64 the visible flat surfaces clean up easily and the detail stays grey. That is why the answer has to be prevention rather than a cleaning routine.
Household dust is mostly textile fibres, skin cells, and particulate tracked in from outside. It is generated continuously by people living in the room, which means the two variables you control are how much air reaches the car and how much of that air is loaded.

The jump in protection between an open shelf and any enclosure is far larger than the difference between one enclosure and another. If you own fifty cars on open shelves, enclosing the five you care most about does more for the collection than upgrading a cabinet ever will. The acrylic static problem
Acrylic holds a static charge. Wiping it, sliding it across a surface, or simply having it sit in a dry room leaves the outer face electrically attractive to airborne particles, so an acrylic case often looks dustier on the outside than the shelf next to it.
Two consequences worth planning for:
- Do not dry-wipe it. A dry cloth on acrylic drags the grit that is already there across the face and leaves fine scratches, and it recharges the surface so more dust arrives immediately.
- Use a damp microfibre cloth, then a dry pass. The moisture discharges the surface as well as lifting the dust.
The static problem is on the outside of the case, which is the good news: it is a maintenance annoyance rather than a threat to the car. The car inside is sealed off from it entirely.
Room placement - the free half of the fix
Where the display lives changes how much dust reaches it, and none of it costs anything.
- Away from HVAC vents. A supply vent is a dust cannon pointed at whatever is in front of it. This is the single biggest placement mistake.
- Away from doorways and hallways. Foot traffic lifts settled dust back into the air; a display beside a busy door gets a fresh supply every time someone walks past.
- Away from beds, sofas and laundry. Textiles are the largest single source of household dust, and bedrooms are the dustiest rooms in most homes for exactly that reason.
- Off the floor and off low surfaces. Dust concentration is highest near the ground, which is another argument for wall-mounting.
- Not under an open window. Outdoor particulate plus direct sunlight is the worst combination available - sunlight carries UV, which is what yellows white plastic and fades printed tampos.
Three things not to do
Do not seal cars in plastic bags or cling film
It keeps dust out and traps humidity in. Long-term contact between soft plastic film and painted surfaces can also mar the finish. If a car is going into storage rather than display, an enclosed box with the car not touching the walls is a better answer than a sealed bag.
Do not rely on a fabric dust cover
A cloth thrown over a shelf sheds fibres onto the exact cars it is supposed to protect, and it means the collection is invisible, which defeats the point of displaying it.
Do not plan on frequent cleaning as the strategy
Every cleaning cycle carries a small risk to tampos, mirrors, aerials and other fragile parts. The safest car is one that needs cleaning rarely, which is an argument for enclosure and not for a better cloth.
What a sealed lit case actually solves
An enclosed case with its own light source handles the two slow failure modes together: dust cannot settle on the car, and a UV-free LED means the light you added to see it by is not fading it. For an open shelf there is no equivalent fix. You can slow the rate down with placement and an air filter, but the maintenance never ends.
