Short answer: dry first, always. Soft brush, then a blower. Most damage to model cars happens during cleaning rather than during display — usually from a paper towel or a household cleaner. And the honest conclusion is that removing dust is the wrong problem to be solving; stopping it arriving is.

Why dust is worse at this scale
A dust particle is the same size on a 1:64 car as on a real one — which means proportionally it is 64 times larger. What reads as a light film on a full-size car reads as visible grit on a 68 mm model, and it settles into panel gaps, grille meshes and around window rubbers where a cloth cannot reach.
That is why brushing beats wiping: wiping pushes dust into the gaps, brushing lifts it out.
The dry method, in order
- Soft brush. A clean makeup brush or a soft artist brush. Work from the roof downward, brushing outward from panel gaps rather than along them.
- Blower. A rubber camera blower removes what the brush loosened. Hold it a few centimetres away.
- Microfibre, dry. For the flat panels only, and gently. This is for smearing prevention, not for scrubbing.
That handles the vast majority of display dust with zero risk.
When something is actually stuck
Only then introduce moisture, and minimally:
- A microfibre cloth barely damp with water — not wet, and not applied to the car directly.
- Painted metal only. Keep away from printed tampos, decals and any paper card.
- Dry immediately afterwards. Water sitting in a panel gap can reach the base plate and any exposed metal.

Cleaning the case is a separate job
Acrylic is softer than glass and marks more easily, and any mirrored or beam-splitter panel carries an optical coating that scratches far more readily than plain sheet.
- Handle panels by the edges, never across the coated face.
- Microfibre only, and clean — a cloth that has picked up grit becomes the abrasive.
- No solvents. The same crazing risk applies, and it cannot be undone.
Acrylic also holds a static charge, which actively pulls dust towards it. An open acrylic shelf can genuinely collect dust faster than a wooden one.
The actual fix
Every method above is damage control. Only a sealed chamber stops dust arriving. A cabinet slows it; open shelving does nothing at all.
