You can display diecast in a room with a window. You cannot display it in the beam of direct sunlight that comes through one. That distinction is the whole answer, and it is the one most collectors get wrong, because a shelf that looks shaded at the moment you set it up may sit in full sun for two hours every afternoon in a different season.

Why daylight is a different problem from room light
Three things arrive through a window that a ceiling light does not deliver: ultraviolet, heat, and an intensity of visible light that is orders of magnitude above indoor lighting.
- UV. Ordinary window glass absorbs most of the shorter-wavelength UVB but passes a large share of UVA. So a car behind glass is protected from sunburn wavelengths and not protected from the ones that matter over years. This is why a car on an indoor windowsill still fades.
- Heat. A closed display case beside glass acts as a second greenhouse. Soft plastic parts, rubber tyres and adhesives all care about sustained heat far more than the metal body does.
- Intensity. Even without UV, the sheer brightness of direct sun drives photodegradation of pigments faster than any indoor source. Reds and printed decals go first.
The damage is gradual and uneven - the side of the car facing the window changes and the other side does not, which is how most people finally notice it.
How far from a window is far enough
Distance is the wrong way to think about it. What matters is whether the display ever sits inside the direct beam, and that changes through the day and through the year.
The practical test: over one clear day, check the shelf in the morning, at midday and in late afternoon. If sunlight lands on it at any of those times, it is in the beam. Then account for winter - the sun sits lower, so beams reach much further into a room in December than in June. A shelf that is safe all summer can be in full sun in winter.
Rough guidance by orientation, for the northern hemisphere:

If you cannot move the display
- Break the beam, not the light. A sheer blind or a net curtain cuts the direct beam while keeping the room bright. This is the cheapest effective fix.
- UV-filtering window film. Applied to the glass, it removes the majority of the UVA that ordinary glazing lets through. It does nothing about heat or visible-light intensity, so it is a partial fix.
- Turn the display. If one face of the collection has to take the light, make it the back of the case rather than the side of the cars.
- Enclose and light it yourself. A sealed case with its own UV-free light means the display no longer depends on daylight to look good, so it can go on the darkest wall in the room - which is usually the wall opposite the window.
What about glass cabinets?
A glass cabinet near a window offers no meaningful UV protection - the cabinet glass has the same problem as the window glass, and now the cars are also in a warmer enclosed volume. Cabinet glass is for dust. Treat UV as a separate problem solved by placement.
