The metal body will outlive you. Everything attached to it will not. That is the honest answer, and it reframes the question - a diecast car does not have a lifespan so much as a sequence of components that fail in a fairly predictable order, almost all of it driven by where it is kept.

Two cars from the same production run, one kept in a heated room away from light and one on a sunny shelf in a garage, will be in visibly different condition within a few years. The casting is not the variable.

The pattern is worth stating plainly: the parts that fail first are the printed and plastic ones, and nearly all of it is environmental rather than inevitable.

The one you cannot fix

Some older castings suffer from a degradation of the zinc alloy itself - often called zinc pest or zinc rot. Impurities in the alloy cause the metal to expand and crack from the inside over decades. It shows as swelling, fine cracks, warping and eventually crumbling.

There is no repair and no reversal. It is a manufacturing-era issue rather than a storage one, so it affects some vintage production and not others, and nothing you do to a healthy modern casting will cause it. If you have an affected piece, keep it dry and stored apart, and do not expect it to stabilise.

What actually determines how long yours last

In order of impact:

  4. Handling. Most broken mirrors, aerials and spoilers happen while moving models around, not while they sit.

Nothing on that list is exotic. A car kept in a heated room, out of direct sun, behind glass or acrylic, and rarely handled is in a fundamentally different situation from one that is not.

Does displaying shorten their life?

Displaying badly does. Displaying well does not, and can extend it relative to poor storage.

A car in a sealed case in a heated room, lit by a UV-free light that runs briefly rather than constantly, is better off than the same car in a cardboard box in a loft - because the loft has the temperature swings and the damp, and the box has the crush risk. The choice is not display-versus-preservation; it is good conditions versus bad ones.

Boxed or loose

For longevity of the car, loose in a sealed case usually wins - the packaging is the fragile part, and keeping a car carded means keeping card and printed film in whatever conditions the car is in.

For value, carded often wins, which is a genuine conflict rather than a trick question. If the packaging carries the value, you are now preserving a printed card, and printed card is the most light-sensitive and damp-sensitive thing in the whole equation. There is no arrangement that displays a carded piece in bright light and preserves it.

A realistic setup

  1. Inside the heated part of the house.
  2. Not in a sun path, at any time of year.
  3. Enclosed for anything you would be upset to lose.
  4. Lit by something UV-free that is off most of the time.
  5. Handled rarely, and picked up by the base.
  6. Cleaned wet-first, or not at all because it is sealed.

That is the whole list. It is unglamorous, it costs very little, and it is the difference between a collection that looks the same in twenty years and one that visibly does not.
