Do Diecast Cars Rust? What Actually Corrodes (and What Can't)

A diecast body can't rust - rust is iron oxide and the body is zinc alloy. The steel axles can. How to tell rust, white corrosion and zinc pest apart.

The body of a diecast car cannot rust, because rust is iron oxide and diecast bodies are cast from zinc alloy, which contains no iron. The steel axles can - and they are usually where the orange you are looking at comes from.

That distinction matters because the two problems look different, start in different places and have different answers. The zinc body does corrode, just not into rust. And there is a third thing - zinc pest - that people call rust and is not corrosion at all.

Why zinc, and why it still corrodes

Diecast bodies are made from zinc alloys - often sold under the name Zamak - because zinc melts at a low temperature and flows into fine detail in a mould. That is what makes a panel line or a badge crisp at 1:64.

Zinc does not rust, but it does react with moisture and carbon dioxide in the air, forming a white or grey layer of zinc corrosion on any bare surface. Paint is what keeps it off. So the corrosion starts wherever the paint is not: chips, sharp edges where paint goes on thin, and unpainted metal bases.

It is also worth knowing that much of a modern 1:64 car is not metal at all. Bases, interiors, windows and wheels are often plastic, so the metal share of a "diecast" car is smaller than the name suggests - and the parts most likely to rust are the small steel ones holding it together.

What causes it: moisture, not age

A healthy casting kept dry does not corrode just because it is old. What starts it:

  • Condensation from temperature swings. Garages, lofts and rooms against outside walls cool at night and warm by day, and water forms on cold metal. This is most of it - see displaying diecast in a garage.
  • A box sealed in a damp room. It holds that moisture against the car indefinitely. Detail in protecting collectibles from humidity.
  • Wet cleaning without drying. Water left in the axle slots and around wheel centres sits exactly where the steel is.
  • Handling bare metal. Skin leaves salt and moisture behind, which is why conservators handle bare metal with gloves. Picking a car up by its base keeps fingers off the plated and unpainted parts.

Rusty axles

Do not soak the car. Get it dry and keep it dry, which stops the rust spreading. If you want to slow it further, a cotton bud with a trace of light machine oil on the exposed axle ends only - kept well away from paint, clear parts and tyres, with the excess wiped off - displaces moisture from the steel.

Removing the rust properly means taking the axles out, which on most cars means drilling the fixings. That is a customiser's job, and on an original car it changes what the car is.

White bloom on the metal

Brush off loose powder dry, with a soft brush. Do not sand or polish it - that takes the surrounding finish with it. The spot will not return to its original look; the goal is to stop it growing, and that means moving the car somewhere dry and stable.

Leave it in the blister. Opening it to treat the axles destroys the carded value you were preserving. Control the environment around it instead.

Swelling or cracking

That is zinc pest, not corrosion. Keep the piece dry, keep it apart from the rest of the collection, and do not attempt a repair.

How to stop it starting

  1. Keep the collection inside the heated part of the house. Stability matters more than any particular humidity figure.
  2. Not against an outside wall, which is the coldest surface in the room and where condensation forms first.
  3. Dry anything you wet-clean, paying attention to the wheels. Method in how to clean dust off model cars.
  4. Do not seal a box in a damp room. Seal dry, or do not seal.
  5. Handle cars by the base.
  6. Enclose the ones you care about. A closed case in a heated room keeps out dust and handling, and it means the car rarely needs cleaning at all.

A buying tip

Rusty axles on a second-hand car are a record of where it was kept. If the listing photos show orange at the wheel centres, the car spent time somewhere damp - so look hard at the card, the blister and any paper packaging too, because damp reaches those first.
