A mirror back shows you the other side of the car and makes a case look brighter - and it doubles every reflection, every smudge and every car in it. It is the right back for one car you want to see all round, and the wrong one for a crowded shelf. A clear or dark back is the quieter choice and usually the better one for more than a couple of cars.
The trade-off
| Mirror back | Clear back | Dark back | |
|---|---|---|---|
| See the far side | Yes | Only if the case is freestanding | No |
| Brightness | Brighter - light bounces forward | Depends on what is behind | Darker; the car stands out |
| Visual noise | Doubles it | Shows the wall or room behind | Lowest |
| Dust and fingerprints | Show twice | Normal | Normal |
| Photography | Hardest - you and the room appear in it | Easier | Easiest |
| Best for | One car, seen all round | Freestanding cases | Several cars, or a wall display |
When a mirror back wins
- One car, with a good rear. Diffusers, exhausts and wings are half the reason some cars are collected. A mirror shows them without moving the car.
- A shallow case against a wall. The reflection adds apparent depth.
- A dim room. The bounced light lifts a case that would otherwise look flat.
When it loses
- More than a couple of cars. Ten cars become twenty, and the display reads as clutter. We made the same point about cabinets in how to arrange a display cabinet.
- A bright room with windows or lamps opposite. The mirror reflects them back at you, on top of the glare the front panel already has - stopping glare and reflections.
- If you photograph the collection. Every shot contains you, the phone and the room.
- If you will not keep it clean. Dust on the car and a smudge on the mirror both appear twice.
One thing people get backwards about dark backs
A dark back makes the car stand out, but it makes reflections on the front panel more visible, not less - the same reason a black car shows every reflection. A dark-backed case benefits most from lighting inside it.
An infinity mirror is a different thing
An infinity case is not a mirror-backed box. It pairs a full mirror at the back with a partially reflective front panel and a light between them, so the light bounces back and forth and reads as a lit tunnel behind the car. That only works with one car in the chamber - a second car blocks the reflections and the depth collapses. The optics are explained in how an infinity mirror works, and ours is the Infinity Garage, with specifications on the specs page.
If you are buying
- Check whether the back is swappable. Some makers sell the same case with a mirror, clear or coloured base or back, which lets you change your mind.
- Check how you clean the mirror. Acrylic mirrors scratch and craze with household cleaners - cleaning an infinity mirror case covers the method.
- Think about where it hangs before choosing the back; the room decides more than the case does.
FAQ
Is a mirror back or clear back better for a display case?
A mirror back is better for a single car you want to see from behind, and it brightens the case. A clear or dark back is better for several cars, bright rooms and photography, because a mirror doubles reflections, clutter and smudges.
Do mirror backs make a display look better?
For one car, often - they show the rear and add brightness and depth. For a full shelf they usually make it look busier, because every car appears twice.
Why do mirrored cases look cluttered?
Everything inside appears twice, along with anything in the room the mirror catches. The more cars in the case, the stronger the effect.
Is an infinity mirror the same as a mirror back?
No. An infinity case pairs a back mirror with a partially reflective front panel and a light between them, producing a receding tunnel. It works with a single car; more cars block the effect.
Does a dark back reduce glare?
No - reflections on the front panel are more visible against a dark background. A dark back makes the car stand out, but it benefits most from lighting inside the case.
