Set the shelf heights before you put anything in, then fill from the eye-level shelf outwards. Almost everyone does it the other way round - load the cabinet, then discover the top shelf has 15 cm of dead air above the contents and the bottom shelf is too cramped to see into.
A cabinet is not a shelf with a door on it. It is glass on several sides, fixed shelf spacing, a viewing distance of a metre or more, and its own internal shadows. 1. Heights first, contents second
Most cabinets have adjustable shelves and most people never move them. Take everything out, sort by height, and set the shelves so each one has roughly a finger's width of clearance above its tallest piece.
Why it matters more in a cabinet than on a shelf: dead air is visible from every angle through glass, and it is the single thing that makes a cabinet read as under-filled and cheap. Tight spacing reads as designed.
Practical order:
- Group everything by height on the floor first.
- Give the tallest group the bottom shelf - weight low, and tall items block sightlines if they are up high.
- Set the eye-level shelf next, with the most spacing, because that is where the best pieces go.
- Fill remaining shelves tight.
2. The eye-level shelf is the whole cabinet
One shelf in any cabinet gets looked at properly. In a floor-standing cabinet that is usually the second or third shelf from the top; measure it against where you actually stand, not the middle of the unit.
- Best pieces there, fewest of them.
- Top shelf is seen from below - it shows undersides, so put things there whose profile still reads at an angle.
- Bottom shelf is looked down into - good for anything with a top surface worth seeing, bad for anything whose side profile is the point.
3. Use the depth, in rows
Cabinets are usually deeper than the objects in them, and the standard mistake is one flat row at the front with empty space behind.
- Two rows, with the back row raised on a riser so it clears the front row. Even 15 mm of lift is enough for small items.
- Stagger the back row so pieces sit in the gaps of the front row rather than directly behind.
- Do not use the depth for storage. If the back row cannot be seen, those pieces belong in a box, not in the cabinet.
4. Reflections are the cabinet-specific problem
Glass on multiple sides means every light in the room appears in the cabinet, and side glass reflects the contents back at odd angles.
- Check from your normal standing spot, in the evening with the room lights on, which is when the reflections are worst.
- Move the cabinet or the lamp, not the contents. Reflection geometry is fixed by where the light and the viewer are.
- Avoid facing a window - daylight reflection makes the cabinet unviewable for part of the day, and the UV is a separate problem covered in can you display near a window.
- A dark back panel cuts the see-through effect and makes light-coloured pieces stand out. A mirrored back doubles the apparent contents but also doubles the reflections and the visual noise.
5. Light every shelf, or the bottom disappears
An unlit cabinet is lit by the room, which means the top shelf gets some light and the bottom gets almost none. This is the most common reason a cabinet looks worse than the objects deserve.

6. Grouping inside a cabinet
Because a cabinet is viewed from further away than a shelf, fine composition is largely lost. What survives at distance is alignment and colour blocking.

7. Things that belong in the cabinet plan, not as an afterthought

- Leave one shelf under-filled deliberately. A cabinet with no breathing room anywhere reads as storage.

Where a cabinet is the wrong tool
A cabinet shows quantity well and makes any individual piece hard to elevate - everything gets the same shelf, the same light, the same treatment. If the goal is for one piece to be the hero, that is a job for a separate lit enclosure rather than a better-arranged cabinet.
