Most cases that look yellow have not yellowed. They are hazed from dry-wiping, or filmed with smoke and kitchen grease - and both of those come off. Actual yellowing goes through the material, takes years indoors, and cannot be polished out. So the first job is telling the three apart, because you can fix two of them this afternoon and the third is a purchase decision.

The quickest test: compare a hidden part of the panel with the exposed face. Look at the edge that sits under the frame, or the underside of the base. If the hidden area is clear and the face is warm, that is UV yellowing. If both look the same and a damp cloth comes away dirty, it is film. What actually yellows acrylic
- UV, cumulatively. Direct sun through a window is the big one. Total dose is what matters - intensity multiplied by hours - so a case that catches an hour of afternoon sun every day is on a clock, and the same case three metres further into the room is not.
- Material without UV stabiliser. Display-grade acrylic is usually made to resist this, which is why good cases stay clear for years. Cheap stock is where the "acrylic goes yellow" reputation comes from.
- Heat. Not a cause on its own at room temperature, but it accelerates everything else - lofts, conservatories, sunny sills.
- Smoke and cooking. Technically a surface film rather than yellowing, and the single most common cause of a case that "went yellow" in one year rather than ten. Detail in protecting diecast from smoke.
- Solvents and adhesives, sealed in. Fumes from fresh glue, paint or a newly built kit trapped inside a closed case can stain and haze the inside face. Let anything freshly made air before enclosing it.
What does not yellow it

- Age by itself, in a normal heated room out of the sun. Acrylic is not on a timer.
- Ordinary dusting, done wet. Done dry, it causes the haze that gets mistaken for yellowing.
How to prevent it
- Keep it out of the sun path. Check the wall morning, midday and afternoon, and remember the low winter sun reaches further into a room. This single decision does more than everything else combined, and it protects the cars too: protecting Hot Wheels from sunlight.
- Buy material that states UV resistance. "Clear acrylic" is not a UV claim. If a listing does not say it, assume it is not.
- Never clean with ammonia-based glass cleaner, acetone or alcohol. These cause crazing, which looks like ageing and is permanent.

- Keep it out of kitchens and away from smoke. Airborne grease films every surface in the room; a display case just shows it first.
- Air anything freshly glued or painted before it goes inside.
If it has already yellowed
Be straightforward about this: through-material yellowing cannot be removed. Polishing takes off a few microns of surface - it will not reach colour that runs through the panel, and repeated polishing thins and distorts it.
The realistic options are to replace the affected panel if the case is built with separate panels, to reposition the case so the remaining panels do not follow, or to live with it. What is worth doing first is the cheap test above, because a good proportion of "yellowed" cases are actually filmed or hazed, and those two respond completely.
Choosing a case that will stay clear
- Ask whether the acrylic is UV-stabilised or UV-filtering - and note that these are two different claims. Stabilised protects the panel; filtering protects the contents.
- Cast rather than extruded acrylic is harder and more optically consistent, which mostly shows up as scratch resistance over the years.
