How to Protect Hot Wheels From Sunlight

Window glass blocks most UVB and passes most UVA, so indoors is not protection. What fades first on a Hot Wheels, in order, and the four measures that work.

Ordinary window glass blocks most UVB and passes most UVA, so a Hot Wheels sitting indoors behind a window is not protected. That single fact is the one most collectors are missing, and it is why cars fade on a windowsill that never gets touched by direct sun for more than an hour a day.

Sun damage on a 1:64 car is cumulative and irreversible. Nothing restores a faded tampo. So everything below is about reducing total exposure, in the order that actually works.

What fades first on a Hot Wheels

The order is consistent, and the metal body is last:

  1. The blister card. Printed cardboard fades faster than anything else on a carded car, and on a mainline the card is often most of what a collector is protecting.
  2. Printed tampos. Livery graphics, sponsor logos and stripes lose contrast from the edges in.
  3. White and light plastic parts. Interiors, wings and bases yellow from the exposed surface inward.
  4. Reds, oranges and Spectraflame-style finishes. These pigments shift and dull before blues and greens do.
  5. Clear parts. Windows haze and yellow slightly over long exposure.
  6. The diecast body. Effectively unaffected by light.

If a car is carded, the card sets the limit, not the casting.

The four measures that work

1. Get it out of the beam — this is most of the win

Not "away from the window": out of the path the sun actually takes. Check the shelf at three times on one clear day - morning, midday and late afternoon. Then remember the winter sun sits lower and reaches much further into a room, so a shelf that is safe in July can be in full sun in December.

North-facing walls in the northern hemisphere are the safest; west is the worst, because afternoon sun is long, low and hot.

2. Cut the hours

Total damage is intensity multiplied by time. A display lit only when someone walks past takes a fraction of the exposure of one lit all evening. This is the argument for motion-triggered lighting rather than a strip left on - our own case lights for about 20 seconds per trigger and is off the rest of the day.

3. Use UV-free light, at 4000 K

If you add light, it should not add UV. Ours is a cool-white 4000 K UV-free LED at 90+ CRI: 4000 K keeps white cars white rather than cream, 90+ CRI keeps Spectraflame and metallics reading as metallic, and UV-free means the light you added to see the car by is not the light fading it. 4. Enclose the ones that matter

A sealed case does not block much light on its own - what it does is let you control the light inside it, and keep dust off so the car never needs wiping. Cleaning damage and sun damage are the two slow killers, and enclosure addresses both.

What does not work

  • Relying on window glass. It stops most UVB and passes most UVA. Indoors is not automatically safe.
  • Relying on a glass cabinet. Same transmission problem. Cabinets solve dust, not light.
  • Dimming the display light instead of switching it off. Lower intensity, same hours - the dose keeps accumulating.
  • Card protectors alone. A protector case guards the card from creasing and dust. Unless it is specifically stated to filter UV, it is not sun protection.
  • Fixing it afterwards. Faded tampos do not come back, and peroxide treatments on yellowed plastic commonly reverse over time.

If the display has to be near a window

  1. Break the beam with a sheer blind or net curtain - the cheapest effective fix, and it keeps the room bright.
  2. Add UV-filtering window film, which removes most of the UVA ordinary glazing passes. It does nothing about heat or brightness.
  3. Turn the display so the back of the case faces the light rather than the side of the cars.
  4. Rotate the collection. If a car is only out for part of the year, its lifetime dose falls accordingly - the method is in what to do with collectibles you do not display.
