1:43 is the awkward scale: too big for the 1:64 cases that fill the market, too small for the 1:18 cases that get all the attention. That single fact causes most of the display problems people have with it, and it is why a 1:43 collection so often ends up still in its boxes.
Being direct about our own position first: we build cases for 1:64, and they do not fit 1:43. Nothing below is going to end with us selling you something. What follows is sizing, and the handling rules that carry over from one scale to the next.
How big a 1:43 car actually is
Divide the real car's length by 43.
- A 4,300 mm saloon comes out at about 100 mm.
- A 4,600 mm coupe comes out at about 107 mm.
- A short hatchback around 3,900 mm comes out at about 91 mm.
So most 1:43 cars land in the 90-115 mm band, against roughly 60-80 mm for 1:64. That is not a small step up - it is close to half as long again, and the height and width grow with it. A shelf spaced for 1:64 will not take them.

The three real options
1. Keep them on their supplied plinths
Most 1:43 models ship on a fitted base with a clear cover. It is the most common way collections stay displayed, and it has one large advantage: the car is already immobilised and already sealed.
The trade is that every model then looks like every other model - identical plinths in a row reads as inventory rather than display, and the covers scratch and haze with handling. 2. A cabinet, with shelves set to 1:43
The right answer for a collection of any size. The mistake is inheriting shelf spacing from a cabinet bought for something else - 1:43 needs the shelves set to it, with roughly a finger's width of clearance above the tallest model, or the display reads as dead air.
Depth matters more at this scale too. A 1:43 car is deep enough that a two-row arrangement needs a real riser behind, not a token one. Arrangement method is in how to arrange a display cabinet.
3. Individual cases for the few that matter
Same logic as any scale: a car isolated and lit reads as chosen, where a row reads as a collection. At 1:43 the cases are physically larger and correspondingly more expensive, so this is a decision to make for two or three models rather than for the whole shelf.
What carries over from other scales
The damage mechanisms do not care about scale:
- Light is cumulative and irreversible. Printed decals and light-coloured plastic go first, and ordinary window glass passes most UVA - so indoors is not protection. Full reasoning in how to stop collectibles from fading.
- Dust settles into the detail, and at 1:43 there is more detail to settle into - grilles, wipers, mirrors, wheel faces. Photo-etched parts on higher-end models are the worst case, because a brush catches them.
- Dry-wiping scratches. Wet the surface first so grit floats free.
- Handling breaks things. Pick a model up by its base, never by a mirror or a wing.
Two things that are specific to 1:43
Resin models behave differently from diecast
A large share of the higher-end 1:43 market is resin rather than metal. Resin is more brittle, more temperature-sensitive, and generally has no opening parts - so it tolerates handling and temperature swings less well than a metal casting does. Unheated rooms are a worse idea for a resin collection than for a diecast one; the environments to avoid are in displaying diecast in a garage.
The boxes are often part of the value
1:43 collectors keep boxes far more than 1:64 collectors do, and those boxes are printed card - the most light-sensitive and damp-sensitive material in the whole collection. If the packaging carries value, it belongs stored dark and stable rather than displayed alongside the model.
Lighting, briefly
Same three numbers as any scale: neutral 4000 K so whites stay white, 90+ CRI so paint and metallics read correctly, and no UV. The one 1:43-specific point is that a larger model needs the light further back to avoid a hot spot on the roof - a strip that works at 1:64 distance will blow out the upper surfaces of a bigger car.
