A card protector solves exactly two problems - creasing and handling - and does nothing about the two that actually destroy carded value over years, which are light and damp. That is the thing most protector guides leave out, and it is why collections in protectors still fade.
Protectors are worth using. They are just not what they are often assumed to be.
What a protector actually does

The two "no" rows are the ones that matter over years. Printed card is the fastest-fading material in a diecast collection, ahead of tampos and white plastic - the order is set out in how to protect Hot Wheels from sunlight.
The types, and what each is for
- Soft sleeves. Cheapest, thinnest, and effectively packaging rather than protection. Fine for moving cars around; not a display solution.
- Clamshell protectors. The common two-piece rigid case that snaps around a carded car. Good against creasing and crushing, easy to open, and the standard choice for mainline cards.
- Sealed or screw-together acrylic cases. More rigid, usually clearer, and the ones people use for premium and higher-value cards. Better optics, more expensive, and slower to get into.
- Long-card and oversized protectors. Sized for the longer premium cards - and this is where people buy wrong, because a mainline protector will not take a long card.
Measure the card, not the car. Card sizes vary by line and change between years, so the protector that fitted last year's mainline may not fit this year's, and premium lines are a different size again.
Fit problems worth knowing about
- Too tight is worse than too loose. Forcing a card into a protector creases the corners you were trying to protect.
- Too loose lets the card shift and rub in transit, which scuffs the print.
- Stacking protectors that were not designed to stack puts pressure on the blister of the one underneath.
- Older cards are more brittle. A vintage card that has already dried out can crack rather than flex when being fitted.
The damp trap
A protector is not a climate control device, and a close-fitting one restricts airflow around the card. If a car is put into a protector in a damp room, that moisture stays against the card rather than equalising with the room.
So the rule is the same as for any sealed container: seal dry, or do not seal. A carded car in a protector in a heated, stable room is fine. The same protector in a garage or loft is a small humid chamber. Full reasoning in protecting collectibles from humidity.
What to do about the fading, since the protector will not
Protectors and light protection are separate purchases and separate decisions:
- Placement does most of the work. Out of any direct sun path, checked morning, midday and afternoon - and remember the winter sun reaches further into a room.
- Ordinary glazing is not protection. Window glass passes most UVA, so a card on an indoor wall opposite a window is still on a clock.
- Check whether the protector states UV filtering. Some do. Most say nothing, and "clear acrylic" is not a UV claim.
- Cut the hours of any display lighting, and use a UV-free source. Total exposure is intensity multiplied by time.
- Rotate. If the card is only on display part of the year, its lifetime dose falls accordingly.
Carded or loose
Worth stating the conflict plainly rather than pretending it resolves: you cannot both display a carded car in good light and preserve the card. Light is what makes a display worth looking at and light is what fades printed card.
