Short answer: it is not the camera. The difference between a photo that looks like a toy on a table and one that looks like a car is almost entirely camera height, background and light — three things a phone handles fine. Fix those in order and the gear stops mattering.

1. Get down to the car's eye level
This is the single biggest improvement available, and it is free.
Shooting from standing height gives you the angle nobody has ever seen a real car from. That top-down view is exactly the visual cue that says “small object on a surface” — and the brain reads it as a toy instantly.
Put the lens at the height of the car's own side mirrors. On a 1:64 model that means roughly 15–20 mm above the surface, which usually means resting the phone flat on the table and tilting it slightly. It looks absurd while you are doing it and it transforms the result.
2. Kill the background
At this scale, background clutter is proportionally enormous. A pen behind the car is the size of a shipping container.
- Plain and dark is the safest default — it makes paint and reflections carry the image.
- Get separation. Move the car well forward of the backdrop so the background falls out of focus.
- Watch for reflections. A glossy model reflects the room, including you and your phone. Move, or block the reflection with a card.
A lit, sealed display case does this for you by construction: the chamber is the backdrop, and it is already isolated from the room.
3. Control the light
The same three numbers that govern display lighting govern photography:
- ~4000K. Warm household bulbs put a yellow cast over white and silver paint that no amount of editing fully removes.
- High CRI. Low-CRI light flattens the shadow under the sills — the line that communicates the car's shape.
- Soft, from above and slightly forward. One hard point source blows out a hotspot on the door and leaves everything else dull.

4. Focus and the phone's limits
Phones focus close but not infinitely close. Two practical fixes:
- Back off and crop rather than pushing the lens right up to the car — too close and the phone hunts for focus and warps the proportions.
- Tap to focus on the front wheel arch, not the middle of the door. It is where the eye lands.
Portrait mode is unreliable at this scale; it frequently cuts into a spoiler or a mirror. Real background separation beats simulated separation.
5. Making a static model look like it is moving
This is where phone photography hits a genuine wall. A parked model looks parked, and no setting changes that. The only reliable fix is to put something in the frame that is genuinely moving.
Fog is the practical option: streamed past the bodywork it reads as airflow, and airflow reads as speed. It also photographs well because it catches the light and gives the image depth.
