Before you try anything: find out whether the yellow is on the plastic or in it. Surface grime - smoke film, skin oil, dust bound in place over years - washes off in a few minutes with mild soap. Yellowing that is the polymer itself changing is a chemical change through the material, and no cleaner reaches it.

The two-minute test
- Wash a small area with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap on a soft cloth.
- Look at the cloth. Discoloured cloth means there was surface grime, and washing is your answer.
- Compare the washed patch to the rest. If it is now noticeably lighter, keep washing - it was dirt.
- If the cloth stays clean and the patch is unchanged, the yellow is in the plastic.
- Check a hidden surface. The underside, the inside of a part, anywhere light never reaches. If that area is still white while the exposed side is yellow, it is light-driven degradation, not dirt.
That last check is the decisive one and it costs nothing.
If it is dirt
- Mild soap, lukewarm water, soft cloth. Start here and often finish here.
- A soft brush for textured surfaces and panel lines, where a cloth cannot reach.
- Isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud for stubborn spots on bare plastic - but test somewhere hidden first, and keep it away from paint, printed decals and clear parts.
- Never abrasive. Scouring pads, powders and toothpaste dull and micro-scratch the surface, which makes it look worse in the long run.

If it is the plastic itself
Then it is not a cleaning problem, and this is the part worth being straight about.
Light - particularly UV - drives a chemical change in many plastics that shifts them toward yellow. It happens from the exposed surface inward, which is why the hidden side stays white, and it is the same mechanism described in why white plastic turns yellow.
Your options are limited and each has a cost:

Why retrobrighting is a trade, not a repair
Peroxide-based treatments are the standard answer online and they do visibly lighten yellowed plastic. Three things get left out:
- It commonly comes back. Treated items frequently re-yellow, sometimes faster than they yellowed originally.
- It is a chemical process on an object you care about. It can affect surface finish, embrittle thin parts, and it is unforgiving of uneven application - patchy results are common and worse than uniform yellowing.
- On collectibles it can hurt value. Some categories treat a chemically altered piece as less desirable than an honestly aged one, in the same way as a visible repair.
It is a legitimate choice on an item you want to use and enjoy rather than preserve. It is a poor choice on something valuable, and a bad one on anything with printing, decals or a painted finish.
The part that actually matters
Since the change is irreversible in practice, the useful work is preventing it on everything not yet affected:
- Out of any direct sun path, checked morning, midday and afternoon, and remembering the winter sun reaches further in.
- Ordinary window glass is not protection - it passes a large share of UVA.

- Enclose the light-coloured pieces if you have a choice about which ones get the sealed, lit case. White and light plastics show it first and worst.
