Turn it over and look at what is holding it: screws come out, rivets do not. That one look decides everything. A car screwed to a display plinth is a two-minute job with the right driver; a car whose own chassis is held on by peened rivets is a one-way operation that changes the car permanently.
Two different jobs get called the same thing, so it is worth separating them.

Off a display plinth
- Turn the plinth over and count the fixings before turning anything. Missing one and lifting is how mounting posts snap.
- Match the driver to the head. Most are a small cross head, but not all - some use a triangular or otherwise tamper-resistant head, and the wrong driver rounds it out on the first turn. If the head is not a shape you have, stop and get the bit rather than improvising with a flat blade.
- Support the car, not the detail. Hold the body over its strongest area while you unscrew. Mirrors, wings and aerials are what break during this job, not the screws.
- Expect a pin or a locating post as well as the screw. Lift straight up rather than rocking the car free.
- If it does not lift with the screws out, something is glued. A small amount of adhesive under the tyres is common. Work a thin blade under the tyre contact patch and lift gradually - do not lever against the body.

Off the car's own chassis
This is the one to think about before starting.
If it has screws
Undo them, lift the base straight off, and expect the glazing, interior and sometimes the wheels to be loose the moment it separates - work over a tray so nothing rolls away. On reassembly, stop as soon as the screw is snug. The threads are cut into soft zinc alloy, and over-tightening strips them permanently.
If it has rivets
Mainline cars are usually assembled by peening a post over, which means there is no screw to undo. Getting the base off means drilling the peened head away, and it cannot be undone - the usual route back together is a small screw tapped into the drilled post, or adhesive, and either way the car is no longer factory-assembled.
That is a fine trade on a common car you intend to customise, and a bad one on anything you might sell. If you only want the car to sit flat and secure in a case, you almost certainly do not need the base off at all - use a base or plinth instead, as in keeping cars from rolling off a shelf.
Before you start: three checks
